Speed running events like Awesome Games Done Quick and Summer Games Done Quick are a great way for runners to create their own profile and showcase their professional games. Given the competitiveness of these games and the pressure of the event, it is relatively rare for runners to actually set a world record in a marathon. But that’s exactly what happened to a particular Sonic the Hedgehog Speedrunner on Monday.
Sonic Runner Flying Fox set a new world record for the original Sonic the Hedgehog on Monday’s “Sonic Block”. In the run, Flying Fox used the character Tails to play the entire original game. This is only possible with the 2013 re-release of the game on Android and iOS. Moderators took some time to notice that FlyingFox set a record, as this category relies on in-game time rather than real-time. Meanwhile, the runner was delighted to say, “I didn’t die.” This delay was partly due to an event that occurred virtually this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Are you kidding or a back-to-back world record? !!Another every 9 seconds thanks to another ridiculous run @ zaxon96 Sonic 3: Congratulations to AIR! What are these sonic runners eating today? # AGDQ2021

Immediately after running FlyingFox, Runner Zaxon 96 set a new world record in the Sonic fan game Sonic 3 AIR, an expansion port for Sonic 3 & Knuckles. According to the Games Done Quick Twitter account, this is the first time a consecutive world record has been set at a GDQ event, which is certainly a historic milestone.
