Studies show that corn ethanol reduces greenhouse gas emissions

Greenhouse gas emissions from corn ethanol are 44 to 52 percent less than gasoline, according to a new study from the US Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory.

John Linder, chairman of the National Corn Growers Association, states that corn and ethanol production efficiency has improved.

“We must thank the farmers for adopting the practice of giving confidence to carbon sequestration and reducing the carbon strength of ethanol through in-house production, and that (ethanol) plants have improved efficiency. Needs to be evaluated, and has pushed the (carbon strength) score to a better place, “he says. “This is a double lift in the right direction on the feed-in side of ethanol production through corn, and on the processing and value extraction of by-products.”

A retrospective study analyzed US corn and ethanol production data from 2005 to 2019 and found that the carbon intensity of ethanol in corn was reduced by 23%. This decrease is due to improved corn yields, reduced fertilizer intensity inputs, increased ethanol yields, and reduced energy in ethanol plants.

“This new study really strengthened some of the previous studies,” he says. “When they realized that they didn’t really incorporate all the data and all the science and the scope was a bit too narrow, we saw them broader in the big picture in this retrospective study and found great results. I’m really proud of that. Corn and ethanol. ”

He says such Brownfield studies show that the ethanol industry is ready to help tackle climate challenges.

“Today we can make a difference. You don’t have to wait five to ten years to make a difference,” he says. “We can do that with a higher mixture of ethanol and can actually reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the transport fleet.”

According to Linder, corn producers are pleased that the US Department of Energy is aware that biofuels, including corn ethanol, can play an important role in US carbon reduction efforts.
