Tentative plan, UFC may not return to “Fight Island” until summer – MMA Sports

The UFC concludes the week of whirlwinds in Abu Dhabi with three events in eight days.

As the pandemic continues, the promotion plan is tentative, but I don’t think it will return to “Fight Island” until summer. Currently, events until March, and perhaps beyond, will be held at UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

“If I had to plan it in my head, I would be back in June or July,” Dana White said at a post-match press conference at UFC 257 on Saturday night. “Do you know? While we are here, we will have a new inauguration and see what happens.

“I think traveling to the United States will be another big challenge for us this year.”

One of the nice things about the series of events at Etihad Arena last week was that there were fans in the 18,000-seat venue. Conor McGregorReturn to action. Due to the COVID-19 security protocol, only about 2,000 people could participate in each card. Still, it made a difference in the atmosphere. The UFC has had no fans since UFC 248 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on March 8, 2020.

In the promotion, can McGregor, who is still the top draw despite the recent defeat, compete in the vacant arena of the UFC Apex in Las Vegas? That’s possible, but White takes a wait-and-see approach to planning US events.

Signed an executive order
This requires international travelers to test negative for COVID-19 and self-quarantine upon arrival. If any exemption is not granted for professional sports, future cards may have problems.

“When it came to this, these fans here were great. It’s cool to have fans,” White said. “We were able to connor at Apex. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know what’s happening in the United States or what’s going to happen this year.”

“It sounds like things get tough over there and we’re talking about a 14-day quarantine like Canada. If that happens, it’ll be a problem.”

Of course, “Fight Island” was originally set up to attract international athletes who couldn’t travel to the United States with their UFC card. We may return to such a hub in the near future.

“This situation will never be perfect, but Abu Dhabi is as close to perfect as you can get,” White said. “You may have to move here this year. Yeah. It’s as close to perfect as you can get. The way these people do everything, everything in this country is of everyone’s abilities. It will be done as far as it goes. I can’t believe it. ”
