Los Angeles (Reuters)-California health officials on Friday in Walt Disney (NYSE :) Co’s Disneyland and other theme parks will reopen on April 1st with limited capacity after being closed for almost a year due to a coronavirus pandemic.
The California Department of Health said in a statement that capacity would be limited to 15% to 35%. Masks and other safety measures are required, and the park is initially open only to state residents.
From April 1st, outdoor stadiums and ball parks will be reopened with reduced capacity.
In a statement, Disneyland Resort President Kenpotlock said the decision meant “returning thousands of people to work and greatly helping nearby businesses and our community as a whole.”
“We can’t wait to welcome guests as the responsible Disney safety protocol is already in place around the world,” Potlock said.
He didn’t reveal the date Disneyland would reopen in the Southern California city of Anaheim.
Disney shares were trading at $ 195.10 after business hours after closing at $ 189.99.
Disney said in September that it killed about 28,000 workers across US theme parks, primarily in California and Florida. Walt Disney World in Florida reopened last July due to limited capacity.
Friday’s announcement follows the reduction of coronavirus cases and vaccine deployment in California. Disneyland parking lots are currently used as mass vaccination sites.
Theme parks such as Disneyland, Universal Studios, Legoland and Knott’s Berry Farm strongly protested last October when California health officials refused to quickly reopen attractions.
The California Attractions and Parks Association called Friday’s announcement “Encouragement News.”
“The park now has a framework for safe and responsible reopening … to bring people back to work safely and revitalize the local economy,” the association said in a statement. ..
