The Jet may appear to score 49ers veterans – NFL Sports

When Jets hired Rex Ryan as head coach in 2009, he inherited the roster that won nine games the previous year. The roster wasn’t lacking in talent, but Ryan was a free agent and had priority — his men.

Jets added linebackers Bart Scott, safety Jim Leonhard, and defensive end Marques Douglas during Ryan’s first off-season. They all came from Ravens, where Ryan was the defense coordinator. They were important additions to Jets who participated in the AFC Championship Game in each of Ryan’s first two years. Part of that was their ability in the field, but their greater contribution may have been for Ryan outside the field. Three of them were extensions of Ryan, who helped teach his defenses and also preached the Gospel of Rex.

The new coach needs a companion in the locker room to get players to participate in the program. Seeing Forty-niners pending free agents is why it makes sense for Jets. New director Robert Surrey.. After working as a San Francisco defender coordinator for four years, Saleh certainly aims to bring some of his former defenders to Jets. He will also consider the attack as new attack coordinator Mike LaFleur came with him from the 49ers.

“Friendliness is always comfort,” Sale said this week. “It’s mostly human nature that attracts you to the people you work with and the people around you, but there’s still a process you go through. It’s fit and worth it. All the different things Yes, there are many moving parts that go into it. Yeah, that’s great, but that’s not the main determinant of whether we can put those people, those players into the building. “

Saleh may not try to create 49ers East, but it’s not surprising that some of San Francisco’s free agents ended up as Jets when the negotiation window opened on March 15.

Here are some of the 49ers free agents that Jets and Saleh may sign:

Richard Sherman, Cornerback

No one is as big a Jets fan as Sherman. He repeated the message, saying that when Sale was hired, Jets “got something great.” He turned 33 at the end of the month and is not a player in the heyday boom corps with the Seahawks. Still, after playing well in the 49ers in 2019, Sherman was limited to five games last year due to a calf injury. Sherman may want to join the candidate, but if he is interested in reuniting with Sale, he can be the leader of Jets’ great locker room.

K’Waun Williams, cornerback

Jets has many positions that need a lot of help. Cornerbacks are one of them, and the 49ers have several corners that are about to hit the market. Brian Pool will be Jets’ free agent and they may make him walk. Williams in the slot corner will be a powerful alternative. According to PFF, he has allowed 99 targets one touchdown in the last two years.

Saleh appreciated Williams at the end of last season.

“The reason everyone loves KK, especially the reason you really love KK, is his speed, instinct and trigger. This is called a trigger. How to trigger on the day of the game and within each play “Sale told reporters in San Francisco. ..

This may be the return home for Williams, who grew up in Paterson, NJ and played high school football at St. Joseph’s Regional in Montvale.

Kyle Juszzik, full back

Jets didn’t have a true fullback for years. Their last four aggressive coordinators did not use them much. Juszczyk was the best in the NFL with 49ers. He has been to the Pro Bowl in each of the last four seasons. If you want to carry out a full-back attack like La Fleur did in San Francisco, it makes a lot of sense to seduce Juszczyk.

Jason Verrett, Cornerback

Bellett has been fighting injuries in his career, but 2020 was a healthy season. Jet is desperately in need of help in a cornerback, and general manager Jodagrass may take a volume approach to the problem and add a bunch of cornerbacks.

Jakiski Tart, Safe

Jets may be happy with the safety situation if they re-sign or franchise the Marcus Maye and Ashtin Davis tags. However, if in doubt, Tartt may be an option.

Kerry Hyder, Defensive End

Jets need to desperately raise the pass rush. Free agents have some expensive options, and Jets could go that way. A cheaper option is the hider, who led the 49ers in the 8.5 sack last season.

Other considerations: CB Ahkello Witherspoon, WR Kendrick Bourne, QB CJ Beathard, RB Tevin Coleman
