In 2021, Gears of War 3 was released for PlayStation 3. Really. Some kind.
Last year, a long-lost prototype dedicated to the Xbox console running on the PS3 was revealed in favor of self-proclaimed former hacker Pixel Butts. An eight-hour video showing the build playing was released, but with only two bugs. This footage can still be viewed-Epic is not trying to remove it:
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the build being created, PixelButts has released it to the internet via archive.org. You can download it now, but you need PS3devkit to run it.
Epic Games previously confirmed that the internal build was genuine, but never made it publicly available. Instead, it was “a by-product of Epic’s internal Unreal Engine 3 testing process utilizing both Gears and Unreal Tournament,” and “not part of the actual PlayStation 3 product work.”
This week, Pixel Butts announced a build release twitterHe also said, “It’s not your technical support” and “I don’t ask any questions” (before answering a few more questions).
It’s been 10 years since the Gears of War 3 PS3 data was built, so we’re releasing it to celebrate it.
This was the last one I was sitting on, so I have no plans to release a prototype game stuff anymore. https: //t.co/Tg5TS1mzN2

“This is an archive of the original data created by Epic Games on May 19, 2011 for Gears of War 3 for the PS3 system,” he writes. “Originally created during engine testing, it leaked 10 years ago and remained unusable data while circulating between collectors and exchanging hands.
“I was the first person to get this data working nine years later, and decided to release it on the 10th anniversary of the build’s creation (May 19, 2021). So far, this is the only one. Epic data for the PS3 version of the game, because everything else was written with the leaked source code. “
