Why Street Fighter 6’s modern controls are still available in competition
In a video interview with Game informer, Nakayama extends the importance of the balance of competitiveness and explains that the modern game type setting does not prevent this. Near the 3:50 mark, he says:

Given that the intent of these new controls is to make it feasible for competition, they are likely to be tolerated in future official Capcom tournaments. This can happen anyway, as these latest controls limit some of the character’s move sets based on the playtest of the game’s first available demo. They provide easy shortcuts to special attacks, but take quite a few normals. The modern control type can only fit 4 specials, so players with more characters will have to learn the traditional commands of the rest of the specials anyway. What’s more, special movements like the signature Shoryuken usually change based on the strength buttons used in the command, but the latest controls in the game seem to eliminate this subtlety. .. That said, community testing is still early, so Capcom has time to update the modern control type with fan feedback.
