(Reuters)-The US Court of Appeals rejected a petition by the US Department of Justice on Thursday to suspend Texas’s restrictive abortion law, which bans proceedings as early as six weeks gestation.

The Fifth Court of Appeals in the United States said the law could remain in force until “quick” further proceedings were taken in the attention-grabbing legal opposition.

The Texas Abortion Law, which came into force on September 1, is no exception to pregnancy due to rape or incest.

The general public will also enforce a ban and reward at least $ 10,000 if successfully sued someone who helped provide an abortion after fetal cardiac activity was detected. Law critics said the provision would allow people to act as bounty hunters against abortion.

The Legal Department argued that the law prevented women from exercising their constitutional right to end pregnancy. This was recognized in the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision of the Supreme Court, which legalized abortion nationwide.

The ministry also argued that the law improperly interfered with federal efforts to provide abortion-related services.
