Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s flyweight veterans Jessica Andrade and Cynthia Calviro will meet this weekend (Saturday, September 25, 2021) at UFC 266 in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Given Valentina Shevchenko’s dominance, both former straw weights aim to take advantage of quick title shots to score. Andriy realized that he was trapped in a cage against the “bullet” after receiving only one £ 125 victory, but Shevchenko remained in class and quickly turned his back. Alternatively, Carbiro split a pair of flyweight matches, but she was still able to climb the top five and be fairly close to the potential Shevchenko showdown.
One woman returns to the winning line and flyweight title mix. Let’s take a closer look at the secrets of each athlete’s victory.
Major wins: Rose Namajunas (UFC 237), Katrin Chokagian (UFC Fight Island 6), Claudia Gadera (UFC Fight Night 117), Carolina Kowalkievich (UFC 228), Tesia Torres (UFC on FOX 28), Joan Calderwood (UFC 205), Angela Hill (UFC Fight Night 104)
Main loss: Valentina Shevchenko (UFC 261), Wayley Chan (UFC Fight Night 157), Rose Namajunas (UFC 251), Joana Jedjezik (UFC 211)
Keyed to victory: Former Strawweight Champions in the world have really fought who is who in female MMA. “Bait Estaca” is a certified powerhouse, and unlike most other companions, it offers brutal slams and single-shot knockouts.
Andrade wants this fight in the foot or clinch, which is two areas where you can do real damage with punches and knees. Often Andrade is someone looking for a takedown, but for Calvillo caliber fighters, Brazilians are better off keeping it standing.
Calvillo likes to draw a circle from the outside and pick a shot while standing up. Andrade needs to get closer without creating a takedown opportunity in the process. Closing the distance behind the jab is a great way to do that, but it’s not really Andrade’s style. Instead, the Brazilian needs to make sure to start her combination with a body shot. This ensures that her level is low.
If Carbiro appears to be fighting, Andrade has to pay her for an attempt at a close range powershot.
Major wins: Jessica Eye (ESPN 10 UFC), Joanne Calderwood (UFC Fight Night 113), Cortney Casey (ESPN 1 UFC), Polyana Botello (UFC Fight Night 140), Montana Stewart (LFA 1)
Main loss: Caitlin Chokagian (UFC 255), Carla Esparza (UFC 219)
Keyed to victory: Calvillo is one of the best fighters in any division. She is really good at scrambling, moving positions quickly and being given a small opportunity to lock her submissions.
In order for her to win, Carbiro needs to drag this onto the mat. In some of her past games, Carbiro has spent a lot of time happily kickboxing with her opponents rather than demonstrating her strengths. Well … it would hurt if she made that mistake on the other side of a puncher like Andrade.
Instead, the goal should be to ducking under Andrade’s wide swing. She hits her body more than most of the time, but Andrade still only likes to chase her opponent with a huge left hook swing. If Calvillo can angle, stay in a fighting position, and duck under such a strike, the takedown should land.
Standing at the top and wrangling your neck is arguably Calvillo’s best shot to win an upset victory.
The female flyweight is a bit confused.
Andriy was completely destroyed by Shevchenko, but isn’t she too far from the rematch? Probably not. There are not many candidates. If Andrade returns to the winning line in style here, she can easily return to the title eliminator in another battle. Similarly, Carbiro may have lost his last match, but she is ranked high and has not yet faced a “bullet”. If Carbiro upsets the previous champion, it automatically gives her a stronger argument than many of her peers for the title shot.
so UFC 266, Jessica Andrade and Cynthia Calviro slow down and open the main card. Which woman will win?
