UPS establishes global cold chain logistics unit

UPS Inc. (NYSE: UPS) announced on Monday that it has integrated all cold chain logistics and delivery services into its dedicated global operations under its Atlanta-based UPS Healthcare umbrella.

The business, called UPS Cold Chain Solutions, more than doubled the company’s global freezer storage capacity to 1 million square feet, especially expanding UPS’s European cold chain network, including new facilities in Italy. To do. Dan Gagnon, Vice President of Global Healthcare Strategy and Marketing at UPS Healthcare, said UPS will continue to expand its relationship with airlines with proven drug delivery capabilities and continue to use its own cargo ships.

According to Ganyon, UPS uses sub-container luggage (LCL) maritime services to move special containers that usually do not require urgency to justify the use of air freight services.

UPS has provided cold chain services on a relatively limited ad hoc basis. UPS provides data from the Biopharma Cold Chain Sourcebook, which forecasts 48% growth from 2018 to 2024 for drug storage and delivery maintained at 2-8 degrees Celsius, the traditional range of most biopharmacy. I quoted it. The COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) should be kept around minus 70 degrees Celsius. An equivalent vaccine produced by Moderna Inc. (NASDAQ: MRNA) can be kept at -20 degrees Celsius.

Last summer, UPS opened freezers in Louisville, Kentucky and the Netherlands, where global air hubs are located, to handle the frigid temperatures. UPS then built another freezer in Singapore.

UPS Healthcare operates within the supply chain and freight divisions, one of UPS’s three major business units.
