The following graph shows heavy truck sales since 1967 using BEA data. The dashed line is the seasonally adjusted annual sales (SAAR) for May 2021.
Heavy-duty truck sales fell to 180,000 SAAR in May 2009 and really collapsed during the Great Recession. Since then, heavy-duty truck sales have risen to a record high of 563,000 SAAR in September 2019.
However, heavy truck sales began to decline in late 2019 due to falling oil prices.
Heavy-duty truck sales actually declined at the start of the pandemic, dropping to 299,000 SAAR in May 2020.
Heavy-duty truck sales in May were 553,000 SAAR, up from 473,000 SAAR in April and up 85% from 299,000 SAAR in May 2020.
