For Colombian designer Miguel Mojica, design is going to transform the world in a disruptive way while also addressing sustainability. This mission is embodied by the amazing invention of the WaterLight lamp, which can generate light continuously for 45 days using only 0.5 liters of salt water. His work won the Silver Cannes, Innovation and Social Responsibility in the Design category at the Cannes Lions International Creativity Festival 2021 in France.

It’s easy to forget that hundreds of millions of people around the world don’t have access to electricity and blame poverty and poor health because Western households are only given electricity. Thankfully, progress is being made. Globally, the number of people without electricity has dropped from 1.2 billion in 2010 to 759 million in 2019. World Bank.. Where power lines haven’t reached home yet, mini-grids consisting of solar panels or diesel generators have emerged to fill the gap, and the number of people connecting to the mini-grids is 2 between 2010 and 2019. It has more than doubled. 5 to 11 million people.

But in some remote homes, even some solar panels are out of reach. That’s where the WaterLight project comes in. The project was inspired by the design after visiting a poor indigenous community in Laguahera, Colombia, where electricity is scarce.

“The WaterLight project not only brightens the lives of the Wayuu community in Colombia and sheds light on Laguahera, but also reaches homes that need light but do not have access to electricity, allowing people to continue doing household chores at night. Introduced to be able to., Crafts and fishing adults, studying children, etc. Far from my country of Colombia, promoting this new revolution in clean energy I felt it was an opportunity to become a person, “says Mojika.

This device produces a small electric current by ionizing salt water. The electrolyte from salt water chemically reacts with magnesium. The energy generated can be used to power LED lamps or to charge small devices such as mobile phones and tablets.

WaterLight is made of recyclable material, is waterproof and has a lifespan of 5,600 hours. It is suitable for several years of use. The product design features indigenous symbols and colorful straps handcrafted by native Laguahera craftsmen.

“We are confident that we are increasingly aware of the impact we have on the planet. We are committed to sustainable and responsible design, and the changes that a new generation of designers are making. Today, that’s the reality. Sustainability has become an integral part of design time. It will definitely help solve new challenges that arise in the future. In addition, biology, medicine and technology. Interdisciplinary work with field experts will be the key to sustainability in our everyday environment by designing innovative products, “Mojika said.
