The main reports this week are the start of homes in August, and new and existing home sales.

The FOMC will meet this week and no policy changes are expected.

10:00 am: September NAHB Home Builder Survey.. The consensus will be a read of 75-74 in August. Numbers above 50 indicate that more builders consider the sales situation to be better than bad.

—– Tuesday, September 21 —–

8:30 am: Housing begins In August.

This graph shows the start of single and total housing since 1968.

The consensus goes from 1.534 billion SAAR to 1.56 million SAAR.

—– Wednesday, September 22 —–

7:00 AM ET: Mortgage Banking Association (MBA) Mortgage Purchase Application Index..

Daytime: AIA Architecture billing index August (leading indicator of commercial real estate).

Existing home sales10 am: Existing home sales August from the National Association of Real Estate Agents (NAR). The consensus is 5.81 million SAAR, down from 5.99 million in July.

The graph shows existing home sales from 1994 to last month’s report.

Residential economist Tom Lawlor Expects NAR reports 5.88 million SAAR.

2 pm: FOMC Conference Announcement.. No policy changes are planned for this meeting.

2 pm: FOMC forecast This includes quarterly economic forecasts by Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) participants, as well as forecasts of appropriate federal funds rates.

2:30 pm: Federal Reserve Board of Governors Jerome Powell A press conference will be held following the announcement of the FOMC.

8:30 am: First weekly unemployment insurance claim The report will be published. The consensus is on the first bills from 332,000 to 320,000 last week.

8:30 AM ET: Chicago Fed National Activity Index In August. This is a composite index of other data.

11:00 AM: Kansas City Fed Manufacturing Survey In September.

12: 00 PM: Q2 Flow of US fund account From the Federal Reserve System.

New home sales10 am: New home sales From the Census Bureau in August.

This graph shows new home sales since 1963. The dashed line is last month’s sales rate.

The consensus is 714,000 SAAR, which is basically an increase from 708,000 in July.
