# Why doesn’t the magnet propulsion truck really work?

Finally, there is the crane itself. I’ve omitted some of the less important forces here. The most important is the force that the magnet and the cart pull in opposite directions.

All of these objects have zero net power. This is an important part. If the net force is zero, the acceleration will be zero. These three objects, whose velocities start at zero, remain zero. They won’t move. It does not work.

I think part of the reason this doesn’t work is that you can’t directly see the fascinating interaction between the magnet and the cart. Such things make it look like magic — and magic can move things.

Therefore, this is also a small variation of a magnet cart that does not work. Suppose you leave the crane attached to the cart and replace the magnet and iron with rubber bands. Stretching a rubber band creates an attractive force similar to the interaction between a magnet and iron. However, you can actually see the interaction with a rubber band. check it out:

It doesn’t work, and I don’t think anyone expects it. But it’s essentially the same as a magnet cart.

Wiley E. Coyote Understands Physics

I like to use old cartoons as an example, and in Looney Tunes Road runner The series, Wiley E. Coyote, is constantly trying to find new ways to catch very fast-moving birds, or perhaps stupid rabbits.Usually he Make a mistakeBut sometimes he’s just right. Well, that’s right.

In the following episode, he seeds some birds with extra iron. After the road runner eats it, Wiley E. attaches a magnet to himself so he can catch the bird.

Of course, that doesn’t work. In the cartoon, the magnet is attracted to the moving train and Wille E. collides with it. And, more realistically, in this case, the magnetic interaction produces a very small force that is not enough to overcome the friction.

However, the main idea is at least based on something real. Did you notice that in this Wiley E. Coyote method, the magnet and iron are attached to two separate things? That is an important part. Remember that forces come in pairs. The magnet pulls the road runner, but the road runner pulls the magnet back. The forces from the magnets are on the road runner and not part of the Wiley E, which means that those forces aren’t canceled and he can zoom out to his destruction.

After all, when things look too good and not true, they are probably true.
