Peter Kafka Recode Zack ward, CEO of Quartz, why he and others bought a financial news site.

Seward is looking for additional investors in Quartz. He told Kafka that Quartz has a strong brand with an enthusiastic and loyal audience interested in global business news.

He said subscription revenue equal to advertising revenue at Quartz is still at least five years away. The former owner, Uzabase, was trying to create a community of readers who said Seward “did not work as expected.” Then a pandemic broke out and Uzabase revalued ownership.

“I’m interested in many political parties, and somewhere along the way, [Quartz editor in chief] Catherine [Bell] And I raised my hand, “said Seward.

“I love Quartz and I deeply believe in what we are trying to do here,” Seward said.

“If you’re going to ask your readers to come with you on a journey, the publication needs to represent something,” Seward said. “… in the case of quartz, that means making the business better.”
