Chris Wondolowski saw the 2020 MLS season come to a disappointing end at San Jose Earthquakes, but returns to another rift by winning the MLS Cup title at the club.
The quake announced on Friday that Wondolowski signed the year 2021 season contract.. With 166 goals, MLS’s greatest goal scorer in history, Wondolowski remains in the club where he has spent most of his career.
“2020 will certainly be a year we will never forget. And the pandemic has caused so much pain around the world that it also gives us the opportunity to think about what I value most. “Thank you,” Wondolowski said in the club’s release. “We’ve been working hard to make 2020 the final year of our career, but we can’t wait to rethink and join our teammates with the goal of returning the MLS Cup to San Jose. Fans are always ups and downs. He supported me, and I regret not always saying goodbye. “
The 37-year-old has led Quake with seven goals in the past season, helping him return to the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2017. Wondolowski had previously stated that the 2020 season would be his last, but the COVID -19 pandemic influenced those plans.
Wondolowksi holds numerous league records and leads in the appearance of earthquakes (344), start (304) and play time (27,555). His best fate came in 2012 when he scored 27 goals in the club. He also supported the earthquake in 2005 and 2012 with two titles, Supporters’ Shield.
His return is a big boost to Quakes’ attack, which he has already seen striker Danny Hoesen leave for Austin FC.
